Parking SE17

A Little Bit About SE17

The SE postcode district was originally created as part of the London Postal District in 1857. In 1868 some of the areas of the abolished S district were added The postal district of SE17 covers Walworth, part of Kennington and Newington. The local authority covering these areas is Southwark.

Edward III gave the manor of Kennington to his oldest son Edward “the Black Prince” in 1337, and the prince then built a large royal palace between what is now Cardigan Street and Sancroft Street. Parliament met in the palace in 1340 and 1342, and Geoffrey Chaucer, the inventor of the printing press, was employed at Kennington as Clerk of Works in 1389. He was paid 2 shillings (now 10p) a day. The palace was often used by royalty, including King Richard II and Catherine of Aragon, later wife of Henry VIII, who demolished the palace in 1531 so that he could use the building material for his new palace in Whitehall. However, much of Kennington continued to be owned by monarch’s elder sons (the Princes of Wales and Dukes of Cornwall) to the present day.

Large amounts of regeneration and gentrification are occurring in Walworth, including the proposed demolition of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, the newly built Strata tower, the proposed demolition of the Heygate and Aylesbury Estates.

Newington gained in importance around 1200 with the establishment of Lambeth Palace nearby, which increased the local traffic. The area remained as a farming village with a low level of population until the second half of the 18th century. There was a little industry, for example, the manufacture of clay pipes for tobacco smoking. In William Shakespeare’s time, there was a theatre called Newington Butts and later there were further theatres. New roads brought development opportunities. The local landowner and MP for Winchester, Henry Penton, started to sell some of his farmland. The 19th century brought more dense speculative housebuilding, and some philanthropic provision too. The Trinity House Estate, laid out around an 1820s classical church by Francis Octavius Bedford, is still largely in existence.
