A Little Bit About Chiswick
Chiswick is a large suburb of west London and part of the London Borough of Hounslow. Situated in postcode W4 it contains Hogarth’s House, the former residence of the 18th century English artist William Hogarth; Chiswick House, a neo-Palladian villa regarded as one of the finest in England; and Fuller’s Brewery, London’s largest and oldest brewery. It is located on a meander of the River Thames which is heavily used for competitive and recreational rowing, and Chiswick itself is home to several clubs. The finishing post for the Boat Race is just downstream of Chiswick Bridge.
The area was historically an ancient parish in the county of Middlesex, with an agrarian and fishing economy. Having good communications with London from an early time Chiswick became a popular country retreat, and as part of the suburban growth of London in the late 19th and early 20th centuries the population significantly expanded.
Whilst the beautiful riverside scenery is perhaps its biggest draw, Chiswick has many other attractions: great stretches of green land; historic houses; leafy avenues filled with handsome Edwardian and Victorian homes; easy road and rail links in and out of London; and a lively, boulevard-style High Road whose tree-lined pavements offer all the important contemporary shopping options as well as a thriving restaurant, bar and café culture with outdoor tables.
Chiswick is situated at the start of the North Circular Road (A406), South Circular Road (A205) the A4 and the M4 motorway, the latter providing a direct connection to Heathrow Airport and the M25 motorway.
Chiswick is an area with great local primary schools. The one with the highest demand is Belmont Primary, which has an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating. There is also Grove Park Primary, St Mary’ RC Primary and Strand on the Green Junior School. The local state comprehensive is the Chiswick Community School. And there’s Arts Educational, a private performing arts school where Lord Lloyd Webber is president. For private education, parents can choose between Orchard House prep and Chiswick and Bedford Park prep.
