A Little Bit About Herne Hill

Herne Hill had regular horse drawn tram services in 1884. The early 1900’s saw the new electric double-decker trams when the London County Council took over the service, but due to the low bridge over Hinton Road and narrow road at Milkwood Road the route was changed. Then in 1930 the trams were phased out in favour of buses.

In 1904 the part of Denmark Hill on the north side was saved from planned housing development, and opened to the public in 1907 as Ruskin Park. Three years later another 12 acres were added to the Park.

Today Herne Hill is a very desirable area to live and has a lively, vibrant and diverse community. There are a wide range of shops, bars, restaurants, parks and open spaces and it has its own Lido. Brockwell Park is a great park and has a list of events on their site.

There is no underground station, but there are excellent transport links, with bus and rail connections to central London (10 min to Victoria, for example), the City and the West End, as well as south to Croydon, Bromley and Wimbledon. The Victoria Line station at Brixton is only a short distance away.
