A Little Bit About Maida Vale

In the 17th Century the Maida Vale area belonged to the Bishop of London and consisted of a few farmhouses surrounded by fields and some woods.  The building of houses began from the early 19th Century along the Edgware Road and Maida Avenue.

The name Maida comes from Sir John Stuart’s victory over the French at Maida in Calabria (Italy) in 1807.  The Public House, The Hero of Maida, was licensed in 1810
and by the 1880’s the area was popularly known as Maida Vale and recognized by the creation of Maida Vale Ward in the Paddington Metropolitan Borough.

Building continued through the mid 19th Century and from the 1860’s red brick was used.  This style spread around most of Maida Vale and between 1898 and 1902 the majority of the mansion block flats were built.

The southern part of Maida Vale around Paddington Basin, a junction of two canals with many houseboats, is known as Little Venice. The area is mostly residential, and mainly affluent, consisting of many large late-Victorian and Edwardian blocks of mansion flats.

Situated in postcode W9 and NW6 in the London Borough of Westminster, Maida Vale offers a wide range of cafes, delicatessens, restaurants and bars in and around Maida Vale, as well as independent clothing boutiques and specialist food shops. Keen shoppers seeking a wider selection of retail stores should visit nearby Edgware Road or Kilburn, where there are plenty of high-street brands. Edgware Road is also home to the Grosvenor Victoria Casino.

Popular bars and pubs include Canal 125, The Elgin, Idlewild, Prince Alfred and The Waterway.

Schools include Little Sweethearts Montessori School, Mary Paterson Nursery School, Elgin Pre-School, St. Joseph’s RC Primary School St. Peter’s C of E Primary School, St. Saviour’s C of E Primary School and The Paddington Academy.
