A Little Bit About Mortlake

Mortlake appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Mortelage. Mortelage is thought to mean a small stream containing young salmon, referring to a fishery in the area on a former tributary of the River Thames which is now gone.

Mortlake is a historic area on the south bank of the River Thames and since 1845 the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race has had its finish point at Mortlake.

The roads to the south of Mortlake High Street are comprised predominantly of residential terraced Victorian streets while to the north the area is dominated by the Stag Brewery site. Mortlake High Street is the historic core and while the residential roads to the south have been subject to very limited change, land along the River has been subject to much change as industrial buildings have been replaced with modern flatted developments.

Situated in SW14 postcode and within the Borough of Richmond upon Thames, it surrounds Barnes, Chiswick, East Sheen and Richmond whilst providing easy access to the M4 corridor.

Mortlake’s primary schools include St Mary Magdalen’s Catholic Primary School, Lowther Primary School, Sheen Mount Primary School and Thomson House School.
